It was night time in the Junkyard. Just a few days from the annual Jellicle Ball. Several of the cats were there, most of them sleeping. Munkustrap was awake, keeping watch from the big tire over the clearing of the junkyard where the Ball would take place.
Jennyanydots and Skimbleshanks were huddled together with the kittens next to the giant clock that was missing its arms. Mistoffelees was sleeping on the trunk of the old car. Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer were sleeping inside a cardboard box, Coricopat and Tantomile were just outside it, lying in the exact same position.
And sleeping above the drainage pipe was the all-famous Rum Tum Tugger, whom everybody just called Tugger. But Tugger wasn't sleeping well. Something that he couldn't identify was bothering him for the past few days. The other cats had noticed the symptoms, too. They noted that his tail, ears, and wiskers twitched frequently while he slept. Tonight, though, they would find out what was wrong.
While keeping watch, when Munkustrap had nearly dozed off, he heard a small sound coming from the darkness. His ears twisted and turned until he narrowed the sound to be coming from the drainage pipe. Munkustrap strained his ears until a loud sneeze followed by a billow of various colours of cat hair came out of the pipe. All the cats woke up to the sound.
An unfamiliar face appeared inside the pipe. It was only her face, nothing else was visible. "Excuse me," she said quietly. "Can you help me? I'm looking for someone."
"And are you sure that 'someone' is here?" Munkustrap asked.
"I've been asking around the city where I might find him, I was told he belonged to this tribe."
"Who is this cat you are looking for?" Munkustrap wanted to get to the point.
"I believe he is known as...'Tugger'" The mysterious kitten said.
"Yes, he does belong to this tribe." Munkustrap said. "Why are are you looking for him?"
The kitten was afraid to say why, but she forcecd herself to. "Apparently, he is my father."
Suddenly, a crash came from above the pipe where Tugger was laying. He had lost his balance on the car battery he was on and knocked over an old lamp. All the cats were exasperated at what the kitten had said. She was still mostly hidden in the pipe, so any 'resemblance' was hidden.
Finally, Tugger said something, "I never had any kids, prove it."
So she did. She came out of the pipe and the resembance between Tugger and her was very clear. She first faced the clearing so the cats there could see, then she turned around to face Tugger so they could both see eachother. The kitten was also surprised to see the true resemblance between her and her father, whom she had never seen before.
Tugger, wanting to make sure the kitten was related to him, came down onto the ground from his resting spot to get a closer look at her. Apparently, inheriting Tugger's height, she didn't have to strain her neck to look up at him.
"What's your name?" he asked, finally.
"My name is Tiara." she replied. "And don't ask me how I got it, `cause I don't know."
Tugger paused for a moment, trying to think of what else to say. Finally, he said, "I still don't believe it. I don't remember ever having any kids. What else can you do to prove you're my daughter?"
Tiara thought for a moment, then backed up a few steps to look him over a bit more. Then she walked back to him and impulsively reached over and grabbed his tail. Then held up her own tail. They both had a distinctive white tip. Tugger knew it was very rare for a Maine Coon cat to have a white tip on it's tail, only a few were known.
Tugger couldn't think of anything else to deny the kitten was his daughter, so he decided to change the course of the coversation and ask, "Who is your mother?"
"Her name was Titania. She told me about when she first met you a little over a year ago. She said you seemed a little 'hyper' at the time I was conceived."
Tugger tried to remember what happened that night. "I don't remember ever meeting a cat named Titania...but I do remember that was the afternoon I found out where the humans kept the catnip hidden..." His eyes suddenly grew wide as he realized what had happened.
Tiara made a exhaled snort-like noise and said, "So you were high. And you don't remember a thing about that night?" She suddenly smiled and said, "Aw, that's ok, you wouldn't have liked her. She was quite strange. And mean! She never let me speak when she was lecturing me for doing something I thought was right."
Tiara had something else she wanted to ask, but is afraid Tugger would turn her down, "So, uh, would you...take me in as your daughter? I have nowhere else to go."
Tugger finally let out some thoughts he had, "Look, Tiara, I wouldn't make a good parent. I'm not responsible enough."
"You don't have to be." Tiara said. "If you would accept me into the tribe and everyone would take part, the whole tribe could be my family. We could have some sort of 'partial relationship' if you don't want to take full responsibility. Besides, I can't go back, my mother disowned me when I was six months old, I've been living life on the streets since."
"That would be a great idea!" said Munkustrap. "I'm sure you'd make a great addition to the tribe." Munkustrap crawled off of the tire and walked over to Tiara. "Come on, I'll introduce you to the rest of the tribe."
While Munkustrap lead Tiara to meet the other cats, Tugger stood where he was, trying to sort his thoughs. All of a sudden he had a daughter. That was what had been bothering him. Somehow he knew a troubled soul that was closly related to him was coming closer each day. He decided he might as well accept it, no sense in ignoring a close reletive, but he didn't believe their relationship would get much stronger.
Not far ourside the junkyard, the all-too-famous Macavity was listening to the event that was taking place within the tribe. 'A new member, eh?' he thought. 'What a perfect opportunity to force my way into dictatorship of the Jellicle Tribe.' He turned to the rats that were just behind him. "Kidnap her, but don't harm her. I want her for ransom." Immediatly the rats started to form a plan.
"...and this is Mistoffelees." finished Munkustrap. "He is best known for confusing his humans with his 'magical powers'." Mistoffelees smiled to make himself look friendly. Tiara felt a twinge of curiosity and attraction to this young black and white cat, but she tried to ignore it. 'No way.' she thought to herself.
"Thank you so much for introrducing me to the tribe, Munkustrap." Tiara said after the tour. "And it was so nice to meet you all. I'd love to get to know you all better, but I'm exshasted, it's been a very long day."
"Sure thing." Munkustrap said, climbing back on the tire for a rest. Tiara walked around looking for a comfortable spot to nap. Suddenly, a small rat popped its head out from some junk. Unaware it was one of Macavity's henchmen, she stepped a little closer to the small creature in attempt to be friendly. But two more suddenly jumped out of the rubble and grabbed her and started to pull her away from the clearing. She screamed trying to get help.
"TIARA!" Tugger yelled and ran towards the rats, but he was stopped by Macavity himself who jumped in between them. He swiped at Tugger; not intending to hurt him, but to keep him back. Tugger hissed as Macavity and the rats dragged his daughter away.
Munkustrap slowly came over to Tugger who was kneeling on the ground and gently put his paw on his shoulder, he could feel him trembling with anger.
"We'll get her back." he said quietly.
"No," Tugger started, "I'm going to get her back. I'm going to fight for her." He stood up and made his way to the broken clock the kittens had vacated. "When he comes back," he said, "he's going to wish he never set foot in this junkyard."
The other cats could believe what they were hearing. But agreed, and waited for the next several hours for Macavity's return.
Tiara climbed with all her might up the wall of the junkyard. Without pausing at the top she ran as fast as she could down to the ground and right into he father's arms. Bawling and yelling about how she now knows how Old Deuteronomy felt like when he was kidnapped last year, as Macavity had told her during her captivity. She also mentioned that she was suprised when she saw Macavity come running out dripping with blood, hollering at the rats to let her go.
"Who was it?" She asked, wonder who had scratched him.
"You'll never guess." said Munkustrap, who was still standing standing at the edge of the junkyard.
Tiara pulled away from Tugger to see his eyes were red with tears (that's only if cats cry). She looked around and noticed there were orange-coloured hairs still floating in the air. She looked back at Tugger and said, "It was you? You fought Macavity?"
Tugger stood up and Tiara saw his injured leg, "Yes, I fought him for you." Tiara smiled, and started crying again. So Tugger gave her another hug. Then they turned to hear Jemima (or Sillabub, whatever you want to call her) sing 'Daylight' as the sun came up.
EPILOGUE
A few days later...
The night of the Jellicle Ball was an extraordinary one for Tiara. All the cats taught her what is done at the Ball and she was able to meet the other cats thet visited, such as Bustopher Jones and Rumpus Cat. And she had become quite attached to Mistoffelees. The cat that was selected to get the new life was none other than Jellyorum. The entire time Tiara never left Tugger's side, they had become nearly as inseparable as Coricaopat and Tantomile. Tugger's leg was bandaged by his humans who gladly accepted Tiara as a new pet. She was given the name "Domino" by them. She still thought it very funny that Tugger's human name was "Elvis".
