Mipyr's Premonition
By Mipyr

As she sat in the window, she wished she could go...oh how she wished she could go.

Mipyr watched from so far away. This week, she'd learned just how high she could jump...how far she could see. She could see over the fence, and into the junkyard. That's where she wanted to go, more than anything else, she wanted to be a part of the Jellicle ball. The first cat she saw, as the light grew dim, was a tense adult, who hissed at scrambled from a passing car.

Mipyr arched her back and hissed, imitating the strange queen, and when she looked back over the fence, there were so many cats, the little house kitten couldn't tell them apart! She watched them dance and dance, and she tried to copy their movement, but they were too fast. It wasn't until the white cat danced...then she could keep up. Mipyr could perform these movements perfectly, well...almost. As she arched, and stretched her back paws slid from the windowsill. She flattened her ears, knowing she'd missed the rest of the white cat's dance. Scurrying back into the sill, she nearly fell again.

Mipyr's eyes widened as they took on the light of the Jellicle Moon. There was another black cat...he was calling her...calling her...calling...

The window slid open, and gracefully Mipyr slid through the opening, Rushing toward the fence, so far away...she could hear them singing and telling tales. It wasn't until she'd gotten there, that she could spot the timid cat from before, and out of all of them, tangled together in a dance, she could see the black tom's face, and feel his heartbreak...the white queen had chosen another mate. Mipyr reached her paw out, but the other black cat was too far away. Then...she saw them, the twin tabbies, sitting on the old car.

They turned their eyes toward Mipyr, and then to Old Deuteronomy, who cocked his head at the strange kitten and smiled. She too smiled, feeling safe enough to come down, though as she began her approach, a proud, and handsome looking silver tom stepped in her way. His tail twitched, wary of this strange young one. She arched her back and hissed, bravely swatting at the Silver Knight, who made a rather puzzled face, and then smiled. The Old King, and the twins, upon seeing this, turned to each other, and laughed softly, before turning their eyes to the black tom.

The king raised a paw at the Silver knight, and then another sending the black tom forward. The meek, and rather depressed creature came toward Mipyr slowly, as the Silver Knight backed away. Mipyr's face reflected the black tom's sadness, as the Jellicle Moon reflects the sun's light. The black tom, could not stand to watch the pretty kitten's face so twisted with despair for him. He batted at the crystal on her new collar, and it glowed bright with the light of his eyes. Mipyr saw things differently then, and she gazed over the junkyard..."Tantomile, and Coricopat. Old Du...De.. Old Deuteronomy."

Mipyr twitched her ears, she could not believe the things she knew, and looking down at the black tom, she realized...she knew him too. "Mistoffelees..." she purred, as she bent to him. They closed their eyes, just close enough to feel the reverberations of the other's purr. To hear the race of the other's pulse. Mipyr's mind rushed, and the wind howled. Their trembling lips came close enough to trespass that sweet forbidden temptation...just as the lightning struck. "MACAVITY!!" Mipyr opened her eyes, she could feel it was that gentle, and skittish cat she first saw, shouting with fear. The sky flashed, as she watched the Jellicles scatter, and she knew that she too had reason to be afraid. Mistoffelees' fur stood on end, as well as her own.

Cupping her cheeks in his gentle paws, he whispered very softly. "Go Mipyr, run home...we will meet again, one day!" Mipyr wanted to protest, but she was too afraid. She hesitated not a second. When she returned to the windowsill, Mipyr turned her eyes back to the junkyard, her eyes widening in horror at what she beheld.

Where was Old Deuteronomy? Who was this? A ginger feral standing victorious over the bleeding silver knight. Leaping down from the sill to run back, she was stopped in her tracks. Her mother lay there still in the grass. The dew on the sunflowers had turned red. Walking on, shaking like a leaf, Mipyr could smell death all around her. Suddenly, she spat and hissed jumping back as something fell on her. A hand. Human hand...Turning to the Jellicle Moon she cried out.

The sun was shining bright in the windowsill when the kitten yowled. Her mother jumped up to lick her nose.

"Your progeny certainly has vivid dreams, wouldn't you agree my dear Pyewacket?"  The Old Witch laughed softly.

"Meow," answered Malkie, nudging against her daughter.

"Pwkamipyr, little one...just what DID you dream?"

The kitten just smiled. "Mother...what's a Mistoffelees?"
